Border Patrol agents committing crimes.

My database consisting of years worth of research to document the known crimes of Border Patrol agents is finally here. As always, this is just a sampling of the crimes committing by agents over the 100 year life of the US Border Patrol. This data is an undercount and actual rates of crimes committed by agents is likely two to four times higher than what we can see here. I am basing this off my 30 year knowledge of being an agent and studying the agency.

Reasons why this database is the tip of the iceberg include but are not limited to:

  • The Border Patrol along with its parent agency, Customs and Border Protection, requires agents to voluntarily report their arrests. This means many arrests are never reported.

  • Domestic violence arrests are often not counted as fellow law enforcement officers most often talk victims out of making charges.

  • Most victims of agents are migrants and few file complaints.

  • The complaint process is not easy for even an English speaker to understand.

  • Most complaints are found "unsubstantiated" because the oversight internal agencies of Customs and Border Protection's Office of Responsibility and the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General are filled with former agents who have been found to do shoddy investigations and often warn agents under their investigation to resign or retire before charges are filed can be filed. (See: Chief Tony Barker and Chief Joel Martinez)

  • Migrant victims are most often deported before they can file complaints.

  • Agents are often charged with horribly violent crimes for judges to only require they attend anger management and alcohol or drug treatment programs. Once these programs are completed by the criminal agent, judges often expunge the violent criminal charges. (See: El Centro Border Patrol Union President Michale Matzke.)

These patterns can be seen when studying the database. Notably, once Border Patrol began publishing their statistics of agents committing crimes, I could then compare how many crimes committed by agents were covered in the media.

As has been shown in my previous posts, Border Patrol agents have been committing more crimes than the people they are apprehending since federal fiscal year 2018. Yet, few know this because as can be seen above, the press is not reporting even the crimes that the agency is admitting its agents are committing.

Please note: this new link to the database has two spreadsheets available to readers. First is the sexual crimes database, the other contains all other crimes including the sex crimes database. Feel free to use this data, and consider giving a link or shout out as no one is paying me to do all of this work. The citation cells only contain one example of a citation even when many others are available, and I have copies of them all.
